State media confirmed the news that, Liu Zhiming, the director of Wuchang Hospital in Wuhan, the epicentre of Chinas virus epidemic died on Tuesday morning. He was the latest medical worker to fall prey to the new coronavirus that is spreading across the country.
The COVID-19 virus that is assumed to have originated in Wuhan last December has almost infected more than 72,000 people and killed approximately 1,900. China had confirmed that last week six medical workers had died from the virus, whereas 1,716 are infected.
Wuhan ophthalmologist Li Wenliang, had been punished by authorities for signaling the alarm about this deadly virus in late December. Li’s death stimulated a national outburst of grief along with anger against the authorities for the mismanagement of the disaster.
People took to social media to grieve on Liu’s death with many users on the Twitter-like Weibo platform doing critical comparisons between Lius and Lis death. In both cases, the deaths were firstly reported in state media posts but later deleted and their deaths were denied, before being confirmed again.
Shortages of masks and protective bodysuits are been faced by doctors in Wuhan. Few doctors are wearing makeshift hazmat suits and working even though they are having respiratory symptoms.
Hubei province and its capital Wuhan has been accounting approximately 1,800 of the deaths from the coronavirus.
